Mothers Against Violence
Mothers Against Violence is a voluntary group comprised of mothers who
have been affected in some way by gun violence. They seek to work with young men and their families to promote positive change in communities that
have been affected by gun violence. Their ultimate aim is to affect change in our community by building and developing young people’s perception of
who they are, and what they have to offer. MAV was formed in 1999 after 4 shooting in South Manchester in a single week that resulted in 2 fatalities
of young people.
MAV now has regional links with Birmingham, London, Nottingham, Huddersfield and Leeds. They've had meetings with the Prime Minister to highlight
their concerns and aims and Patsie McKie and some of the others from the group came along to a CPA Meeting a while back to share their vision with
us. MAV is primarily a secular group but their shared aims inevitably mean that they work closely with organisations like Mothers Against Guns,
CARISMA and the Peace Alliance.
Mothers Against Violence have an excellent website that details their
aims and activities in more detail.
