MATCH REPORT FROM GMC V WEST YORKSHIRE ON SUNDAY 8th MARCH 2020

MENS A TEAM

The A team started the 2020 county pool season with a hard fought 23-21 victory over their close rivals West Yorkshire A.

With their 3 new signings JJ Faul, Sanjay Patel and Aiden Hughes all playing well and winning their first frames with some dazzling pool, GMC A raced into a 9-2 lead after the first session and threatened to run away with the match.
West Yorks A fought back well and at one stage were actually winning 19-18. However, GMC A responded well to the pressure and Sam Reynolds made a solid clearance to pull GMC A level before Mark Beeson the birthday boy sealed victory with a pressure finish in the final frame to win 23-21.

Man of the match was Mark Pemberton with an excellent 4 wins out of 4.

A great start to the season before a tough match away to last year’s region 2 champs Lancs A on April 5th.

MENS B TEAM

We eagerly welcomed West Yorks to JJs  in a hard first fixture . They were undefeated champions last season to win the title at a canter though we lost 23-21 twice to a very strong team at the end of the season.

Always a close fixture recently and we welcomed new signings to the team giving us four subs.

The game started well as we took a 2-1 lead and it was close as we edged in front 8-7 though we lost first session 6/5. West Yorks stepped up and took six straight games to take second session 7/4 and we were in trouble 13/9 at half way. We narrowed the gap to 13/12  and rallied to take the third session by the off frame 18/15 after third session game on!

We took four of next five and 19 all  West Yorks rocking as we gained momentum then a DOB against our captain - me , the cheek of it to put them 20–19 up. That was the spur to take 3 of next 4 out to the hill on 22-21 with two trialists winning their only games Kyle Lavelle and John Noone with an outrageous long cross double. Ian McMullan then held his nerve as Yorks ex captain Kev Armitage gave a tactical foul giving Ian two in a difficult position - is he mad - Ian cleared to give us a well-deserved victory taking last session 8/3 .

A great game with standout players Chris Wilson and Sean Doyle steady , Karl Clarke with 3 who recovered his confidence from last week and played some decent pool , the trialists Brereton 1/2 Lavelle and Noone gave us a crucial 3/4 games but my man of match was Ian McMullan 3/4 and played steady and a great finish to win it for us.

A pleasing win though we did not play really well as a team which is even better. On to Lancs away and we need to be at the races for that one!

LADIES TEAM

New season, some new quality players gained to join with existing steady squad that was retained.

The new players seemed to settle in really well. Match was closely fought all through the day with only 4 frames at the most at any one time between the teams.

At 20-21, it went down to the last 3 frames to try and get over the line, unfortunately just missed out 21-23.

Special mention to Player of the day, new squad member Hayley Weston who won 4/4.

SENIORS TEAM

On reflection an 18-17 win against the runners up in the national championships is a good result but we were still under par and should have won more convincingly but a win is a win.

Ian Sutton and Gareth Owen took the honours with four wins each and a solid return to GMC for Harry Roberts.

It’s always nice to start with a win and we’ll take our great team spirit on to Lancashire next month.
