The Christian Police Association in Manchester

small CPA logo

Welcome!

The Christian Police Association exists to provide a Christian voice of witness within the Police service and to be a source of Christian fellowship and support to Christian Police Officers and Support Staff. We believe that the Christian faith has a critical role to play in the policing of today's society and see and that Christ strengthens and empowers us to carry out our duties more effectively. CPA members are drawn from serving and retired Police Officers and Support Staff alike, and from all parts of the Manchester region. Most of the major Christian denominations are represented as are all levels of the Police rank structure.

Aims and Activities
We are united in our belief that Jesus died for us and is the risen Lord. We believe that God answers prayer and that prayer can bring about a regeneration of our communities. The CPA in Manchester is involved in or supporting a number of different initiatives to that end, such as the Street Pastors project, Redeeming Our Communities, The Message and others. We aim to support any project or initiative aimed at reducing crime and/or outreach to the estranged and disaffected in today's society. We also want to bring God's Word to staff within GMP who have not yet heard it and to this end are currently running an Alpha at Work course open to all members of GMP.
Regular CPA Meetings
We meet for worship, prayer, bible study, discussion and simply for Christian fellowship. Guest speakers (such as Patrick Reilly) are a regular feature. We sometimes arrange meetings in conjunction with a visit to one of our Partners such as The Message, and at other times there is a definite theme to a particular meeting such as when we looked at Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Members working at our HQ in Old Trafford are able to attend weekly prayer meetings and some other Police Stations have their own Prayer Room (such as at Stretford where the Divisional Chaplain leads a time for quiet reflection each week). As a Staff Association for Christians in the Police service we face inwards, but as Police Officers we also face outwards as a voice of witness and a force determined to help bring our communities back from the abyss of crime, violence and decay that many of them face.

Redeeming Our Communities
The is a very exciting regional initiative to support the work of the Police, to reduce crime and to redeem communities across the North-West, all by harnessing the power of shared prayer. The initiative was launched at a large-scale prayer meeting held at the Reebok Stadium in Horwich, attended by over 2000 Christians from all over the North-West as well as a number of VIPs including Hazel Blears from the Home Office, and the Chief Executives of Salford and Sefton councils. Many different community and Christian organisations are supporting this great movement and we are confident that the effect will be far-reaching. The National launch of Redeeming Our Communities was at the NEC in Birmingham in May 2006 and was attended by over 7000 people.

It was pioneered in London in January 2003 by Rev Les Isaac, Director of the Ascension Trust, and has seen some remarkable results, including drops in crime in areas where teams have been working. Each city project is set up by Ascension Trust and run by a local coordinator with support from Ascension Trust and local churches and community groups, in partnership with Police, Council and other statutory agenices.
