CPA in South Africa

CPA in South Africa

This page is devoted to the amazing work being undertaken by our brothers and sisters in Christ in the Christian Police Association within the South African Police Service. The CPA in South Africa was originally formed back in 1920 but was disbanded in the 1960's when the SAPS set up its own Chaplaincy service. The CPA reformed in 1994 and has been going from strength to strength ever since.

The problems we face in the UK seem relatively minor compared to those faced by the SAPS and the communities they serve: Extreme poverty and very high levels of violent crime are a the norm in many areas of South Africa, and the SAPS has to cope with high stress levels and low moral amongst their Officers. The ending of apartheid may have brought about many political changes in South Africa and a will to make things better, but problems do not disappear overnight. The faith, commitment and energy displayed by CPA members in the various provinces is staggering and through them God is certainly shaking the country up!! The CPA in South Africa is very active with over 3000 members, a phenomenal growth-rate from a standing start 13 years ago.

Action Against Crime
The Action Against Crime initiative is very similar in its aims to Redeeming Our Communities, Hope2008, and other UK initiatives. Local Churches and communities are encouraged to meet and pray for their local police and to harness the power of shared prayer to reduce crime and reclaim the streets from the criminals.

Some remarkable success stories have come out of this initiative: Click here, for example, to read about the amazing transformation wrought in the Johannesburg district of Sophiatown through the power of prayer. The arrival of a Christian Police Chief and the presence of a number of other Christian Police Officers has been the catalyst for change that the community themselves had despaired of. Now members of the community drop into the Police Station to attend the prayer room there (which is located directly below the cell block!). Schools have followed the churches in adopting members of the local Police. Local clean-up and crime-watch schemes have also developed. The result? From having the second-higest crime rate of any district in Johannesburg, Sophiatown now has the second-lowest!!!

Alternatively, Click here for a brief presentation of how the Action Against Crime scheme works (MS Powerpoint - 329k).
Adopt-A-Station
The CPA in SAPS have an "Adopt-A-Station" initiative ongoing (similar to the UK's Adopt-A-Cop, despite the name difference). The success of the scheme in areas like Sophiatown is now having a ripple-effect in other area of Johannesburg and elsewhere in the country, such as Cape Town and Gauteng. As in the UK, Churches are being encouraged to "adopt" local Police Officers and to pray for them.

As well as actively envangelising within and outside the Police Service, CPA members are all involved in outreach into the communities they serve. Besides some of the specific initiatives mentioned on this page they are working to reduce the incidence of abortion in South Africa, where backstreet abortions are still commonplace, to reduce drug abuse, and to reduce crime by bringing the Good News of Jesus to criminals and victims alike. Their quest to forge international links led Captain Fanie Van Vuuren (one of the driving forces behind the SAPS CPA) to Patrick Reilly from Assist News and from Patrick to our own site. Please read the Prayer Request submitted by Fanie and include all the members of the SAPS in your prayers, especially the CPA members all over South Africa who are working so hard to bring their country back from the brink.
The Church at Giyani
One of the most heart-warming presentations on the CD mentioned in the update below relates to the Church at Giyani. There what was being used as the Church was built like a very large temporary bus-shelter with a roof but no sides. CPA Members undertook to rebuild the Church from the foundations up and the presentation is a series of photos showing the project from start to finish, ending with views of a service in the newly-finished building and the handover to the delighted pastor.
